At LGL, we accurately distinguish natural gemstones from all types of synthetic and lab-grown stones, including popular synthetics like synthetic sapphire, ruby, spinel, and emerald. Our expert analysis detects any man-made or treated stone, so clients never have to doubt the authenticity of their natural gemstones. We do not issue certification for synthetic stones, ensuring clients have full clarity about their origin.

Heat Treatment
We detect low, medium, and high heat treatments applied to gemstones to enhance color or clarity. Other treatments involving substances like titanium, chromium, or beryllium, as well as HPHT heat, are not classified or certified by LGL. Our analysis provides clients with precise information about heating used while maintaining clarity and transparency regarding what falls within our certification scope.
Chromium & Titanium Diffusion
Chromium & Titanium Diffusion
We identify diffusion treatments using chromium or titanium. This treatment involves artificially introducing elements into the gemstone's surface to enhance or change its color. Such stones are not eligible for certification because we ensure our clients receive only gemstones that meet international standards and have undergone internationally accepted treatments.
Fracture & Cavity Filling
Fracture & Cavity Filling
We detect lead glass filling, cavity filling, and flux heat treatments (heated with borax). These stones are not certified because LGL guarantees that only gemstones in internationally accepted conditions and treatments are issued certificates, ensuring accurate grading and market credibility.
Clarity Enhancement (Oil & Resin)
Clarity Enhancement (Oil & Resin)
We certify only emeralds treated with oil or resin. Other clarity-enhanced gemstones are not eligible for certification, as we maintain the strictest standards to ensure that clients receive certificates only for stones that meet international gemological norms and recognized enhancement practices.
Dye Treatment

Dye treatment involves adding artificial color to a stone to improve or alter its appearance. Dyed gemstones are identified but not certified. This ensures that LGL clients receive certification exclusively for stones that comply with international standards and accepted treatments, maintaining trust, value, and authenticity in every gemstone evaluated.

Beryllium Diffusion
Beryllium diffusion is a chemical process used to alter or intensify a gem's color, often deepening hues in sapphires. Gemstones treated with beryllium diffusion are detected but not certified. LGL follows strict international standards to certify only stones with recognized treatments, ensuring clients' gemstones are genuine, reliable, and valued according to globally accepted practices.
Synthetic Overgrowth / Reconstitution
Synthetic Overgrowth / Reconstitution
We detect synthetic overgrowth, coatings, reconstituted stones, as well as doublets and triplets. These are not certified because LGL ensures that all gemstones issued with certificates meet international standards and have undergone only treatments accepted globally, preserving trust, authenticity, and market value.

Currently, we provide origin testing for sapphires and spinels, leveraging years of hands-on experience and meticulous analysis.

Natural cobalt spinels are rare, and their classification depends on cobalt and iron content. Higher cobalt and lower iron levels indicate superior quality and color. LGL's testing accurately measures these elements to classify natural cobalt spinels, providing clients with reliable certification for these exceptional and highly valued gems.
